PHS senior Mariah Rivera's commitment to community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership has earned her the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Porter County. As a result, Rivera will receive a full tuition scholarship to an Indiana college or university of her choice.
The Porter County Community Foundation's selection committee said that Rivera's outstanding leadership and resiliency led to her earning one of three Lilly Endowment scholarships in Porter County this year.
Rivera is a skilled writer, avid reader, and talented musician with the Portage High School advanced concert band. Rivera plans to earn a degree in sociology at Purdue University or Butler University and then attend law school with the goal of becoming a human rights lawyer.
Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.
In determining Porter County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, the scholarship committee considered academic excellence, leadership and engagement in school activities and community involvement. The committee interviewed each of the finalists then submitted the nominees to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.
Congratulations to Mariah! We wish her the best of luck as she pursues her goals and realizes her dreams!
